A conviction has been entered against a Kāpiti Coast district councillor found guilty of indecently assaulting a council staff member.

David Scott, 71, was accused of rubbing his genitals against a female staff member during a council morning tea in April last year, and a jury in the Wellington District Court found him guilty last month.

Judge Peter Hobbs said a conviction must be entered because, as a matter of principle it could not be correct that elected officials, by virtue of their position, could be immune from the effects of their offending.

He fined Scott $1500 and issued him a first warning under the three strikes law.
