A KiwiRail driver has been attacked on his train in the Manawatu town of Feilding.

The rail operator's chief executive Todd Moyle said the lone driver was attacked by two people who had boarded the train illegally shortly before 3am.

He said that the man was able to escape and lock himself in the train cab but the two attackers threw rocks and smashed the front window.

Mr Moyle said KiwiRail was working with the police.

The driver, while not seriously injured, has been given time off to recover.

Mr Moyle said the police were speaking to one person and are looking for a second.
