Marama Fox has been fined nearly $600 for drink driving.

The former Māori Party co-leader appeared in Hamilton District Court for sentencing this morning.

She pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving last year after blowing more than twice the limit while driving in Hamilton in November.

Community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle gave Fox credit for having no previous convictions and her early guilty plea.

Fox spoke from the dock during the brief hearing, apologising for her poor judgement and thanking the court for its time.

The magistrate said it was a run of the mill matter, and told Fox she'd made a common mistake.

She disqualified her from driving for the mandatory six months.
