Jury told to put sympathy aside in murder case of Mangawhai toddler

A jury has been selected in the trial of a man accused of murdering a toddler in Northland last year.

Aaron James Archer, 31, denies murdering his former girlfriend's daughter Ariah Dawn Roberts on 22 August 2018.

The two-year-old died in Mangawhai, north of Auckland.

Mr Archer pleaded not guilty to murder last year and is on trial in at High Court in Auckland for the next three weeks.

This morning a jury of seven women and five men were selected before the court adjourned for the day.

Justice Whata told the jurors to put aside any feelings of sympathy or prejudice in determining the facts of the case.

Crown prosecutor Olivia Klaassen is expected to open the Crown's case tomorrow morning before the first witness is called.
