About 2000 lightning strikes have been recorded near Fiordland and western Southland this morning.
MetSevice said heavy rain was also moving into the area.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for Fiordland, Westland, and the ranges of Buller and Nelson.
It said about 200mm could fall and thunderstorms were possible.
On the other side of the country there were expected to be very warm temperatures again today.
MetService said smoke from the wildfires burning in New South Wales was also being carried across to New Zealand by strong norwest winds.
