It was another big day for Powerco crews as they continue to work to restore power to storm damaged regions.
Strong winds and flooding caused significant damage to the network on Thursday evening and again yesterday. Coromandel, Kerepehi, and Tauranga were the worst hit.
As field crews focused restoration efforts on these areas today, strong winds were bringing trees and lines down in Masterton.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says field staff had been working extremely hard to restore power in very challenging conditions.
He says crews had made good progress throughout the day, getting power back on to all but 2000 customers. At the peak of the storm there were 9000 properties without supply.
“We are hoping to get the majority of power back on by tonight. Field staff will be out again at first light to continue to restore supply to the remaining customers.”
People should take extreme care around fallen power lines and keep at least 4m away. Report downed lines to emergency services on 111 or Powerco on 0800 27 27 27 immediately.
Powerco may not be aware of all power cuts so it is important customers log their faults with retailers.
Property owners are advised to check their service lines for obvious damage and report this to an electrician.
Overhead service lines connect properties to the main electricity network.
