Girl airlifted after leg impaled by cut branch

A girl who impaled her leg at Rakino Island is one of five people assisted by the Auckland Westpac Rescue helicopter on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the helicopter says the incident happened before 2pm.

"A crew was called out to assist a girl who was running down a track and tripped on a freshly cut branch protruding from a tree stump.

"Her leg was impaled ont he branch and it was cut and left in to prevent bleeding.

"She was flown to Starship Hospital in a moderate condition."

Earlier that day crews were also called to assist a male patient in his 50s suffering burns to his limbs.

"He suffered burns to his limbs after attempting to relight a fish smoker.

"He was thrown by the force of an explosion and flown to Middlemore hospital in a serious condition."
