A policeman suffered facial injuries after he was allegedly assaulted with a weapon in central Dunedin earlier today.
Officers were called to Princes Street in relation to an alleged robbery at around 3:20pm this afternoon before locating a person of interest on Bond Street.
Police deployed OC spray and a taser after approaching the man, however a male officer suffered "moderate" facial injuries during attempts to apprehend him.
Inspector Jason Guthrie, Area Commander, Otago Coastal said: "The officer has been treated at Dunedin Hospital. He is in good spirits despite his injuries.
"Police regularly display significant courage in situations that challenge their personal safety, and this is a great example of that.
"However, it is extremely disappointing to have an officer injured in this way."
A full investigation into the wider circumstances surrounding the original incident has started.
A 20-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Dunedin District Court on Friday, February 9, facing several charges.
