Stolen ambulance stopped with road spikes

Road spikes needed to be used to stop a St Johns ambulance stolen from South Dunedin last night.

Police said the ambulance was tracked by its GPS transmitter after it was taken and road spikes were laid in its path to stop it.

Senior Sergeant Roy Appley said it was driven some distance on the disintegrating tyres and wheelrims, until finally coming to a stop at Waihola, 39 kilometres from Dunedin.

A 30-year-old South Dunedin man was taken into custody.
