One killed in Canterbury crash

UPDATED 8.06PM: One person is dead following a two car crash in the Canterbury area.

Police and emergency services are now free from the crash which occurred at 2.30pm on SH1 Temuka-Orari Highway in South Canterbury.

"It can now be confirmed that one person died at the scene," says police.

"Another person suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to hospital while another two people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene."

Police will continue to investigate the cause of the crash and no more information will be released until all next of kin have been advised.

"The road is now clear and diversions are no longer in place."


Two people are in critical condition after a two car crash in Canterbury.

Police and emergency services are currently in attendance at a serious crash on Temuka-Orari Highway in South Canterbury District.

The crash occurred around 2.30pm.

"It appears two cars have been involved in this crash, and one of the occupants suffered critical injuries," says police.

"The road is currently closed, while the Police Serious Crash Unit works at the scene."

This part of the state highway is closed and there are diversions in place at SH79 and also at Winchester. 

Motorists are asked to be patient while the scene is examined and cleared.
