Scattered thunderstorms embedded within broader areas of rain are likely to affect western parts of the North Island and the northern South Island today.
Some of these thunderstorms may be severe about Waitomo, western Taumarunui, Taranaki, northern Marlborough and the Nelson region, with localised downpours of 20-40+ mm/hr.
"Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips," says the MetService.
"Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain."
